An extraordinary thing is happening in music today: independence. No longer are musicians bound by the profitcentric rules and whims of major record labels, bigwig promoters, nightclub owners and the corporate national media.
Over the past twenty years, a network made up of antischoolmarms has materialized, making it possible for musicians to record their own records, book their own shows, and explore terra incognitas of music that mainstream performers disregard. Pearls of artistic independence and rock n roll fellowship have simmered up across the country, in towns like Sacramento, Olympia, Denver, and Santa Cruz. In the false history of post-Ford capitalism, each of these pearls is a rupture.
The Big Bang showcases the pearls of Santa Cruz along with raw, experimental, furious and tender noises from far and near; it also creates a new rupture for fellowship, performance, and possibilities.
